The Bay of Plenty provides a beautiful yet challenging training ground for those new to boating, and for the more experienced boat-owner who wants to upskill or gain local knowledge.

Our dedicated training boat "Clarky" at Sulphur Point. The Stabicraft is a great little training boat with no paint to scratch, and it is probably better to put a dent or two in my boat rather than yours!

Training Opportunities

Tailored training packages are available for new or experienced boat owners, families, and crew.

The focus is on practical boat skills that build on existing knowledge (e.g. from Coastguard Day Skipper). Training helps ensure everyone on board is safe and capable of operating the vessel and can be conducted in your own boat or in the trainer’s boat.

Training topics:

Boat and safety checks: Inspect boat and equipment, check safety gear, and learn troubleshooting.
Skipper duties: Understand responsibilities and the “rules of the road” at sea.
Boat handling: Learn launching, recovery, berthing, anchoring, and ropework.
Operation skills: Practice close-quarter handling, maintaining trim, and choosing safe speeds.
Navigation: Study charts, tides, beacons, lights, and local navigation.
Weather awareness: Interpret tides, forecasts, and harbour conditions.
Communication: Use radios properly, file trip reports, and handle emergency procedures.
